THE FACE IN THE WINDOW

                              THE FACE IN THE WINDOW

Throughout my life, I've been aware,
of someone watching me.
I simply could not understand,
what reason there could be.
Year after year as I grew up,
no matter where I'd go,
I'd see him, ever watching me,
that face, in the glass window.

At first it didn't bother me,
back when I was quite young.
I'd stop for something, see him there,
just turn real quick, and run.
Then even as a young adult,
when I would see him there,
I'd stop, and look right back at him,
and sometimes, even stare.

But as the years have travelled on,
and he still looks at me,
I worry now, because he's changed,
I fear the things I see.
His look, is much more serious,
his face, all creased with time,
He studies me, in such a way,
as if to read my mind.

I wondered, and I worried,
who this old fool could be,
Until one day, I realized,
that this old fool, was me.
It was my own reflection,
kept looking back my way,
Just watching me, grow slowly old,
day, by day, by day.

About this poem

Happen to notice my face in a store window one day and got the idea. I think I was in my twenties when I wrote it.
