Farewell Friends

In youthful bloom, they smiled so bright
Six friends in time’s fleeting flight,
Captured here in a moment’s embrace
With dreams that time could not erase.
But years danced away swift and sly
Leaving memories beneath the sky.
Now she- the last - at ninety-four
Clutches the photo, heartsore
Torn between grief and gratitude’s art
For friends, now memories, etched in her heart.

About this poem

For over two years, the poet devotedly cared for an elderly lady. During this period, the lady frequently retrieved old photographs of herself from her youth, sharing the stories behind each image. Now ninety-four years old, the elderly lady recently presented a photograph featuring six radiant young women. Pointing to her own image among them, her smile faltered, marred by the sorrow of acknowledging that all her companions have passed away. She finds herself caught between the melancholy of their loss and a profound gratitude for her own continued existence. The poem was inspired by that photograph.

A nostalgic and sentimental poem, reflecting on the passing of time, the fleeting nature of youth and friendships, and the bittersweet memories that remain, cherished by the last surviving member of a close-knit group.
