PEACE WE INHERIT

PEACE WE INHERIT

‘Tis black as darkest night
In this land of war’s blight
Smoke billows to the sky
Giving even the sin tears to cry

Destruction for miles on end
None alive, neither die nor friend
Abandoned land of war's disaster
No knights noble or dark spell caster

The land is wide, and long
And long ago, very strong
In war’s deserted land
A lone warrior bravely stand

Standing with no ally near
His enemies too far to fear
He is a warrior on a strange quest
The end of which, he can only guess

Settled for an evening's meal
Sorrow nor happiness does he feel
Seated on a rock strewn floor
Gazing on the fruits of war

Sorrow, he is beyond
If he felt it, he'd be gone
Who can feel bad
In a world gone mad?

His is a battle to soan the earth
Yet in this waste, what is worth ?
So much destruction he has seen
That hope or happiness are illusions mean

Yet his is a quest to find and feel
Happiness or sorrow, however unreal
Then return back to his own
Add his hope to those unknown

Day breaks on a weary plain
That's borne so much hate and pain
In the distance his far seeing eye
Sees a cross touching the sky

On he goes, though travel worn
In ragged apparel and garments torn
He reaches the Church of days so old
And a strange feeling takes gold

He seemed to be in a place he once knew
Inside he jumped, his spirit flew
For there lay a book, dusted by age
He went and opened to a page

There he sat for day after day
Learning hope on a brand new way
He read of Moses leading the Jews
Of Israel and the God the refuse

He read of a promise, his nation forget
He read of things to come yet
And when he read of the King
He could hear angels sing

He read of the sins that needed forgiving
Saw how foolishly he's been living
Then he caught a ragged breath
As he realized he was destined for death

On his knees, before that ancient altar
He prayed to God, didn't falter
And thanked the Lord, for salvation
And prayed also for his nation

And he knew he had to go,
 Telling all, friend or foe
He took a final look
Closed and carried the old book

So he went, but not alone
He wasn't enough on his own
Christ was with him, at his side
To help him banish his pride

So to all he went, telling the story
They followed, or spurned God's glory
Those who followed praised Christ's name
And so even more to Christ came

So the war, well it ground to a halt
For the people could find no fault
That wasn't covered by God's Grace
As it flooded all over the place

All were at fault, yet none to blame
In the Grace of Jesus name
And the warrior thanked his Lord
For the peace, God restored

He was happy, with a peace true
This same peace can come to you
For though this story is told by man
The peace of God, is God's plan

The story is true…well maybe it's not
But true is the peace that warrior got
For man is nothing on his own merit
In Jesus, the peace, at least, we inherit
AMEN

About this poem

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phillipians 4:6-7
