They Were Six

They were six
Beautiful, proud and free
Full of youth
Of dreams, joy and fun

Of peace they dreamt
Of war they died
Of home they dreamt
While the media lied

A billion enemies they had
Only for being born
A billion wishing them death
Only for drawing a breath

Even the sky begins to cry
The city of gold feels cold
And every soul begins to die

Six yellow ribbons
I thought I saw fly
Across the crying sky

They were six
Each of them a story
Each of them a life

About this poem

I haven't really known how to react to the news of the six Israeli hostages murdered by Hamas terrorists the other day. Perhaps the only way is to keep their memory alive, which this simple piece is trying to do. The piece is also a way of expressing my disappointment at the callous behavior of people online, as if these people's lives were worth less because they were Israeli. We need to be more intentional about calling this behavior out when we see it.
