My Age and Love

The older I get, the harder it is to maintain my hopeless romantic ideals. Scepticism is creeping in, especially over the last few years. I've always believed that true love was real, and possible.

I'd like to believe that it's still possible for me, and I don't think distance has ever been an obstacle. Because true love, would overcome any hurdles placed in its way. The world isn't so big a place that two people who are compelled by love to be together, can't resolve a mere distance issue. But I've been accused of being unrealistic and a dreamer.

True love, knows no conditions, apprehensions, or the meaning of the word impossible. True love, has no boundaries, doesn't understand what inconvenience, or sacrifice is. True love, is relinquishing your kingdom for a horse, and the first sip of wine after crossing the desert. Anything less, and it's not true love. At best, it's infatuation, a fraud, menacing imposter.

I have no kingdom to give, and I don't even have a table, to bring something to. The only assets of value I have, are my heart and soul. And I would enthusiastically lay them both at the feet of my beloved, or surrender them to be burned on the altar of romance. If one day I would abandon my hopes of finding true love, my breath, and being, will expire...

"Numi" is the pen-name I adopted in 2007 after a friend gifted me a copy of The Essential Rumi; by Coleman Barks. After reading some of my works, it was suggested that it reminded them of the works by Rumi. In no way do I align myself with this Great Master Poet, but I do feel a deep connection to his poetry, and the book of Essentials was my constant companion during a 5 year saga, where I was stranded in the Amazon Jungle of Peru, from 2010-2015. more…
