A MOTHER'S COMFORT

A MOTHER'S COMFORT

Mother, there's something I must tell.
Would you heed and help as well?
Speak, my daughter. Speak, my gold.
How could I refuse your word?

Mother, he beats me!
What should I do, mother?
What should I do?
I'm shamed before friends and kin.

The mother solemnly adjusted her hair, pressed her lips, then railed.
Don't talk about it! Not a word, I said!
I won't be lying thee.
You think it was better for me?
But I had the will, of course,
to endure, for the sake of yours.

Yes, I thought of you all.
It's time you think of me.
You think all roses bloomed there?
No shadow anywhere
And black clouds
And downpours of slaps?

This happens to women when their tongues they give.
There was all that lot.
But I still loved him
As my duties commanded.
And I wanted nothing else.
I obeyed what my mother demanded!

Suffer, you're a woman.
He's a man.
Bow your head, be meek, lest your ribs creak.
And don't I know you well.
You're not an angel, I can tell.
Your tongue's too free.
Your husband knows your place, agree.

But mother, how thus can you say?
It ain't normal to scold me this way.
I can't take it anymore.
I want to leave him,
I want to come home.

Her mother's stare said it all.

I can't simplify it any more,
Or explain it better than before.
Your home's with your spouse,
He provides for you.
You're ungrateful.
He even let you toil about. Now, smooth it out.

If only you had borne him a son,
perhaps then you'd be calm.
So, quiet down,
And go to your home.

About this poem

In the country where I live, and in many other countries, we witness family violence. The problem is that the victim is ashamed and hides and suffers all his life. Women who have female children seem to be less valuable than those who have given birth to sons. That seal is supported by some mothers. In addition, mothers who should be the first line of defense and teach their daughters from their own experience that it is not normal to suffer violence, fail this exam. Evil is passed down from generation to generation.

Meliha Suskavcevic

Yugoslavia · 1971 · Sarajevo

Born in the former Yugoslavia, I am a poet who carries the wealth of culture and tradition of the Balkans in my soul. My love for words and art is expressed through poetry and prose, combining experiences and inspiration from different worlds. I published a book of poetry in the country where I currently live, and my dream is to publish it in the United States of America, where I believe it will find its place among lovers of the written word. My poetry is lyrical, filled with emotions, memories and reflections that reflect a deep connection with life and love. Through vivid images and creative metaphors, I strive to convey my feelings and experiences to readers, taking them on journeys through worlds beyond the boundaries of everyday life. Muharem Bazdulj, a recognized writer, described my first collection of poetry like this: "Every first book of poetry is youthful, whether it is written by a poet in his teenage years or one who has passed his forties. What is youthful is primarily the experience that your subject is the entire world, the entire universe. The second, third and later books are necessarily thematically narrow, and this is the one in which you try to say everything. The first book of poetry by Meliha Suškavčević is a book of youth - in terms of courage, in terms of breadth. Already in the title - Nothing average in a cup of space - an old literary trope awaits us varied. Hamlet wanted to squeeze the universe into a nut shell, while Meliha Suškavčević puts it in a cup. It's a more optimistic picture - the cup is open from the top. The universe in the title of this book is not in a cup, because the cup has a handle. Holding onto the handle of her mother tongue, Meliha Suškavčević managed to shape her rich life experience, mostly articulated through photographs, into poetry. narrower and smaller than space." In addition to writing, I am engaged in artistic photography, which allows me to visually explore and express my artistic visions. My photos adorn the trucks of an American company, making the streets of New York and Miami my daily outdoor gallery. This unique form of advertising allows me to share my work with a wider audience, turning the cityscape into a dynamic art exhibition. My creativity is always in search of new ways of expression and communication with the world. Whether through words or images, I strive to leave a mark and inspire others to see the beauty and magic in everyday life. more…

I chose this poem because it tackles significant themes such as gender roles and domestic violence. These form prisons that women are trapped in and as I female, I can identify with these concerns. The pressures of familial loyalty is also topical in the poem and I am grateful that the poet has given voice to these social issues. I particularly loved that the poet used dialogue as it makes the poem engaging,
