About a Girl

Such a beauty I see in this girl over there
And the flowing curls of her long brown hair
She smiles and kisses the wind with such ease
She's light as a feather in a warm summer breeze

With her, I can be anyone I please
She can be whoever, it doesn't matter to me
It just so happens that she's my true love
To be cliché, she was sent from above

She looks to me with eyes of an angel
And slides me a gun from her side of the table
She opens the book of her ancient fables
And reads aloud what I'm to be labeled

She called me a monster, a sultan of slime
My existence itself is an unholy crime
That God himself ain't got the time
To heal a man who ain't worth a dime

She slowly smiled and her teeth showed sharp
A beautiful lady so dear to my heart
Within her eyes I saw a black void
That stared like a statue at her little toy

Screaming now, the ritual is done
She stands and points up toward the sun
My time on earth has been quite fun
But this lady is crazy and she's picked up the gun

Like a clock hitting five she points two ways
One at the sun and the gun in my face
Her beauty was bold and I just had to say
"I love you darling, I wish we could stay"

She pulled the trigger and I awoke
Dreams of her still come and go
To be in love then have it revoked
Is like a piece of your heart that's never at home

It's been a while but she still visits me
Miles away yet still in my dreams
Lost love takes long to heal and scar
Till then it's a wound that plagues my heart

She was kind at first but then she changed
I slowly learned she might be insane
I stayed despite the constant shame
Of her hurting words she carelessly slang

She's somewhere now doing God knows what
Probably doing whatever she wants
Playing her games, having her fun
Making love to a janitor who thinks she's the one

But it's alright, I'm really okay
My time alone has been one of grace
I've harbored love and I've let it grow
At times its even overflowed

Our past creates the one in the mirror
I was raised round love and taught without fear
Her past was different, in fact quite cruel
You never know how kids live after school

Her past consumed and destroyed her love
Daddies games were a little too tough
And just at the point where enough was enough
Her tenderness dropped and it never got up

Love is something she just can't do
I tried to believe it just wasn't true
For all it's worth, I hope this comes through
It was never true love but I'll always love you

I didn't expect this poem to go that way, a love poem turned to a nightmare.

Typical male fantasy. When things don't go his way, she's threatening him with a gun! I believe that does happen, maybe a couple of times a year, somewhere on Earth. More often, what literally happens is that she tells him to clean up the yellow spots in the bathroom, and his mind turns her into a monster so he's justified in fleeing or even fighting. Well, no reasonable woman is going to believe that story. Not even from the rare man for whom it might have been true.

Nicely depicted here, though. The narrator may have some mental work to do but the poet did a good job.

You pretty much nailed it, but does the girl need help too? What about the last half where her supposed insanity is explained? Her past and all that. The narrator indeed has some work to, but how much work can be done before he realizes there is an indelible mark w her name on it? A scar. And if no girl will believe the story, then how is she ever going to be accountable for her actions?

I think the guy's best chance is to stick to very simple, objective descriptions of exactly what happened, with a clear focus on what he did (and no hiding the crucial details). If it's true that he failed to clean, talked to his ex, whatever, and then she pointed a gun at him and threatened to shoot, a protective order might be appropriate. Or she took out the gun after he hit her, in which case no protective order is necessary because he should be in jail. But if there's any flight of fancy or emotionality or any suggestion of "I was just being my wonderful self and she turned into a monster FOR NO REASON because she's INSANE because all women are CRAAAZEEE," those of us who are really old enough to date know that that's coming from a sick guy.

Given the baseline assumption that women are sane and men are manipulative, it's a good idea for men not to use any words that suggest any judgment on women's competence or intelligence. They can say "I don't understand" or "I didn't understand."

Blaming other men for what's supposedly wrong with the woman, as distinct from anything wrong with the way he behaved toward her...yeah, right. Some other man may have done her wrong first but I'll believe that when she says it.

The poem told a story and took a really unexpected but interesting turn.
