To The Unsung Knight
Are you wandering the battlefield,
Waging the never ending war?
The moonlight glinting off your shield,
And unknown shadows looming afar.
What is it that you seek?
Which has taken you far away from home,
This world is not for the meek
And the path you've chosen, you walk alone.
Is it the dragon's wisdom you seek?
Who rests in his lair since the beginning of time!
Or his courage and valour to empower the weak?
Or his stoical stature? Lofty, sublime!
There is no time for a backward glance-
With eyes that know not to shed a tear,
You know that life is a second chance-
And any wrong step will cost you dear.
Every fight is a fight unto death,
And in this game you're all alone,
No option but to face each threat,
And with no one to call your own.
Is it a demon king that you fight?
Or an ancient vengeful soulless god?
They make you cower with their towering might-
To bow before them as your eternal lord!
The night is endless, there is no morn!
The cold blue stars light your way,
You smite with your sword souls lost and forlorn,
An illusion of victory to lead you astray.
The forbidden castle - you should have entered never,
Filled with ancient knights' sighs and breath,
They have been cursed to live forever,
And they cannot seek their rest in death.
They follow you with soulless eyes,
You slink away in fear and pity,
The wind carries forth their mournful cries,
Doomed to stand guard for all eternity.
What is this unforgiving land that you roam-
Where even death fears to tread!
And not a corner to call your home-
And only the grave to call your bed!
.
.
.
The knight comes home to rest at last-
Battle-weary, spent and worn.
He knows not how many eons have past-
For his lost loved ones he can only mourn.
There are chinks in his armour - that were never there,
Through which his bloodied flesh can be seen,
Now silvery pale is his thick dark hair,
And cloudy his sight - that was once so keen.
He knows not how many battles he fought,
Nor how unconquerable death he could cheat-
But victory for himself he has wrought,
The beast lay vanquished and slain at his feet!
About this poem
This was written when my son was living far away in another country and we couldn't meet for several years for various reasons. He was young, in his early 20's, without many friends and no family. He used to play a video game where he had to play as a knight and fight his way through unknown lands and encounter fearful opponents all by himself. Whenever we talked over the phone, he always mentioned this game and how he loved playing it. I found a metaphor between the story of the game and his life and by extension the lives of all the young adults in today's world, who face an uncertain and challenging future. And thus this poem was born. more »
