THE TALE OF THE VANQUISHED AND OTHER ANIMALS

THE TALE OF THE VANQUISHED AND OTHER ANIMALS.

Once upon a time, all the animals                                                                                                                   Gathered in the Town hall                                                                                                                                           To choose for themselves a new king.                                                                                                                     The priest then cast the lot …                                                                                                                                      The lion, tiger and eagle  were favoured                                                                                                                        leaving the buffalo and crocodile disgruntled                                                                                                                     And dared to question the oracle                                                                                                                              by clamouring for the throne too

Every animal wanted its own                                                                                                                                       To sit on the lofty throne                                                                                                                                            For one king would have to rule                                                                                                                          Once chosen by the greater lot.                                                                                                                             Every animal looked for its kind                                                                                                                             Then shamelessly clashed, clawed and                                                                                                                 Even gored to death anyone                                                                                                                                     Not voting for their own.
Chaos became the order of the day                                                                                                                            as biased rage led them all astray                                                                                                                          Not even peace could hold at bay                                                                                                                         Nor shift  their ego  on display.                                                                                                                                                           The weak and fearfully wise                                                                                                                                      Fled off  without delay                                                                                                                                          Refusing to be the sacrificial lamb                                                                                                                          Being looked for to be slain.

Finally, a new king was crowned                                                                                                                             Definitely not everyone's  choice.                                                                                                                                 Well, the hall needed to be locked                                                                                                                          And all the animals had to go home…                                                                                                                                                           Unfortunately, to friendship bruised and battered on the altar of ego…  turning  Kinsmen to foes while the  vanquished.       Dined wisely with the newly enthroned!

About this poem

"The Tale of The Vanquished and Other Animals" is a satirical poem that exposes the dynamics of politics where "the are no permanent friends nor enemies but permanent interest". Whether they win or lose, politicians will always find a way to be relevant in any government in power even if it is to be an opposition. The poem also highlights the length politicians would go to get the electorates sentimentally attached to their ideas and mandates, thriving on the rule of divide and conquer, leaving the electorates in all sorts of disunity (whether gender, tribal, religious or environmental disarray amongst others). The poem, therefore admonishes the electorates to be politically savvy but should not be partisan enough to sacrifice decades of family and friendship built with sweat, blood, hardwork and love on the altar of "political ego". For politicians care less of the relationship that exists between the electorates and their loved ones as long as they get into power. After all said and done in politiking, family and friends are the people that will be there for one when real life struggles and challenges happen
