Rocky Mountain Heaven

Rocky Mountain Heaven

A new day, peeking through the veil of night, promises to share her gifts of sensory wonders…

Hundreds of eyes lurking undercover in the fragrant green thicket of pines, watch me stroll by. How strong my scent must be to the keen aural senses of the wild creatures. I wonder…are they fearful of me, emboldened, or simply indifferent?

The massive Rocky Mountains surrounding me, stand tall and proud. They smile reassuringly to signal I am safe within their protective care. My heartbeat slows in response to their kind gesture.

Chilly glacial waters, spraying wildly from frothy cascades, infuse a stimulating freshness into the air that soothes and satisfies. I breathe deeply, filling my lungs, and feel it course through my blood, invigorating me.

At my feet, turquoise river waters making their way through slippery silver stones, reflect spheres of sunlight that bounce high into receiving boughs of pines. They playfully toss them back. I squint to capture their whimsical game.

Above me, indigo skies, observing all below, take flecks of my favorite color from the river, absorbing them like meandering watercolors on cotton canvas. A stunning masterpiece created just for me.

Curiously, I find myself unaware and unconcerned about the passage of time. I feel happy and content just to be in this moment. A peacefulness has washed over me and I can not help but wonder if I have experienced a spiritual awakening.

My eyes track a lone hawk flying overhead in a darkening sky; he too, observing Nature’s compelling beauty. I watch him turn back and circle gracefully, having sighted a tasty meal along the riverside. He savors it before retiring to the solitude of his nest.

I have witnessed the magic of this day’s magnificent moments —her sprightly escapades and creative wonderment.
Now, I stand in her golden light, in awe of the serene stillness, but for the moving symphony of the falls and the lyrical dance of the river —and I wonder, if I have found heaven.

About this poem

Standing in the middle of the magnificent Canadian Rocky Mountains, a beautiful, cascading waterfall above, and gurgling turquoise river below, I was moved to capture the experience.

Susan Mayer Brumel

 · 1955 · Newark, NJ

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

It's seldom that I read long poems
    This is awesome
It kept me yearning for the next stanzas. Thus, coaxing me to finish the whole piece.
I like the picture it paints.

Oh so beautifully rendered. The last stanza of the poem speaks of “awe” which captures the indescribable essence of the poem, and of a precious magical and even spiritual moment in time that, in the Japanese language and culture, is described so artfully as “yugen.” Well done!

It seems I've heard a very similar story as of late, with photos to boot. How fortunate I am to be blessed once more by the hand and mind of the one who was gifted to have encountered it all firsthand. This is a beautiful rendering, Miss Brumel, of a rare walk with nature that has seemingly affected you in all the right ways. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

Susan, I'm glad you decided to write, your a natural. I felt like I was there with you, in the beginning maybe a little intimidated surrounded by such greatness. And I felt calmer when your heartbeat slowed and you began seeing it for all it's beauty surrounding you.
