Footprints

Footprints

Two round little feet,
like new taters sown
Soft, smoothe and tender,
by magic were grown

Chubby feet flapping,
a butterfly dance
Toes curling, unfurling —
your ballet enchants

Kick with abandon!
into the air —
Dreaming your dreams,
without worry or care

Don't grow too fast,
sweet child newly birthed —
You’ve time to leave footprints,
on the good earth.

About this poem

As I have observed my infant grandchildren’s hands, I have also watched in wonder, the sweet dance of their potato feet. Hence, this poem!

Susan Mayer Brumel

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

What a delightful poem! It beautifully captures the essence of new life, celebrating its purity and boundless joy. It serves as a reminder to cherish the innocence that defines early life, to savor the fleeting moments of childhood. Before you know it, your grand-kids will be grown!

I have always marveled at the miracle of new beginnings!

      Thank you so much.
It’s so true! My babies are literally growing up before my eyes. Every fleeting moment must be cherished.
