Identity: Under You
I,
I fell in between,
Silently hidden,
Forgotten in the middle.
Pressed in the gaps
Between your snaps
And the cracks of your riddles.
Looking to you for cues,
Waiting on clues,
So I can shift-shape
Into whom or what you want me to be—
So I don’t weigh down your life
With mine.
I stay here silent,
The knot in my throat—hidden,
Forgotten in the middle
Of this emotional mess,
Walking light as air
To avoid cracking the eggs
You so carefully spread.
But I don’t know
How much more of this I can take
Before I break—
Splintered, right here, in the middle.
Who am I today?
Who do you want me to be?
If it means,
We’ll go back to the beginning—
When I,
Was enough,
And your words dripped
Nothing but—
Sweet, untainted honey—
On me.
About this poem
This poem is a raw exploration of the ways identity can be suppressed and reshaped under the weight of someone else’s expectations—particularly when those expectations come from a narcissist. It’s about the silent sacrifices we make, the cracks where resentment and longing take root, and the emotional toll of trying to conform to someone else’s version of who we should be. "Identity: Under You" is my attempt to give voice to the hidden struggles and suppressed cries for authenticity. It’s a confrontation, a reflection, and, ultimately, a call to reclaim one’s true self. more »
