Dementia Sucks

When the person you love dies, but their physical self you must sustain,
And all the memories turn bittersweet, your feelings are hard to explain.
Then when all hope appears to abandon you, but the love inside remains,
You soon understand the journey you are on, as dementia takes the reins!

Dementia sucks in so many ways, and everyone’s story is so unique.
As for family, friends, and carers alike; well, the outlook is sadly bleak.
Then as the art of conversation grows more challenging, like a video on repeat.
In our loved ones we see a sudden calmness, telling us, our visit is still a treat!

About this poem

This poem is written from my own personal experience of looking after my mum who had mixed dementia, and the journey mum, myself, friends, family and carers all went on.
