Ghost Bride

It haunts her when she sleeps, that terrifying moment she gets lost in the abyss
The dark shadow cuts her heart so deep, those traumas that she alone must keep
It began when she's about to get married, to a rich man her parents just easily picked
Her eyes widened when she heard he's dead, it was a simple ghost marriage they said

The man's parents worry about their son's lonely soul, to be his lifetime companion will be her perfect role
They believe this wedding will make him leave this world with peace, for his farewell journey to be fully at ease
It's some sort of an old Chinese tradition, undeniably a horrific unimaginable prison
Everyone agreed it's all for the best, the heavy burden she'll forever carry in her chest

She tried to escape and leaves everything behind, but insurmountable threats they instilled in her mind
Until one night she heard them all whisper, if she dies then things will surely become better
She knew they will attempt to kill her anytime soon, it will be just their spirits who will tie the knot in the ritual room
She got a glimpse of her frustrated and tired reflection, she's nothing but a fragile victim of her family's decision

And so...
She ran away from that hellish place
Totally vanished without a trace
But still, she has nightmares of the other side
Where she was once labeled as a ghost bride.

Ghost Bride was on my short list! I was absolutely intrigued. In fact I was compelled to research what a ghost bride was as it was a practice I had never heard of before!

Your poem was compelling and for me, educational!

I look forward to reading more of your work!

    Warmly,

    Maggie

Now that I see it's your entry, I can totally see traces of your familiar narrative style! But, trick or treat (definitely a treat), you've managed to fool me with this especially chilling and spooky story. Very scary and exciting to read all the way through, I was absolutely hooked by the third stanza. Well-written overall, another impressive improvement since the last time I saw your work Francelle. I love this style of yours and it's always fun reading these. Well done and keep writing!
